Art and the Natural World

Hi, all! This article from the New York Times explains how a volcanic eruption in Indonesia in 1815 affected literature and art. Frankenstein, vampires, and J.M.W. Turner’s famous skies all emanated from the major weather changes that ensued from the eruption.

  1. It’s really interesting to think about this in context of how a major natural event unfolds today – when access to its origin could be disseminated throughout the globe within minutes of the actual event via social media/news outlets. What happens to that liminal space for mystery and fantasy to generate art (visual or written) when our capacity to imagine or wonder (or dread) is constrained by facts and data?
