Graffiti: art or vandalism?

The exploration of rhetoric from our readings factors into our understanding of what constitutes art. From the beginnings of men drawing on walls, government systems have dictated the perspective of beauty, perfection, and even artistic vision to an extent. We see the notable swings of art genres (large bodies of work aggregated by themes of the time period) from Gothicism to Neo-classical; however, now as media brings art to life at an accelerated pace, newer forms and mixes of pop art have become more avante-garde. Graffiti art is one of these new genres that have stirred controversy and debate in regards to the aesthetics of chaos and destruction. Art or not? This question remains unanswered.
